Surgery prep for trans folks — $140/session
In preparation for vaginoplasty
These sessions cover all the area that may end up inside you post-surgery. This includes the perineum, the scrotal skin, around the shaft of the penis, and just a few fingers outside this area.
Good to know: If you're planning to have a vaginoplasty at GRS Montreal, or at WCH Toronto, know that neither of these clinics require any hair removal beforehand. The surgeons have their own methods which are generally very good.
But we do have some clients who would like to reduce the risk of unwanted hair post-surgery. While laser alone will never result in 100% clearance, we are able to substantially reduce the amount of hair present going into surgery, which will reduce the chance of unwanted complications afterwards.
Both GRS and WCH ask that there be three months time between your last laser session and your surgery date. So, once you have a date, we’ll count back from there! The more time we have, the better results we can get, with a year being ideal to get maximum clearance.
How to prepare: Yep, you’re going to have to shave this area the day of, or day before, your session. Obviously, this can be a delicate area to shave. Just do as best you can! We will touch you up if need be. For ease, we recommend starting with an electric trimmer to get everything as short as possible. And then gently passing over the area with a blade. Go slow and take care!
What to Expect: While it may seem like laser in this area would be particularly intense, for most clients the sessions are manageable, and over quickly. Usually about 20 minutes.
In preparation for phalloplasty
For clients preparing for phalloplasty we are generally clearing the left forearm or left thigh. And for some clients a small area around the top of the vulva, as well.
Good to know: 100% clearance is typically required before surgery. In our experience, we have found that clients get to complete clearance faster by beginning with laser and finishing with electrolysis. Laser will be faster for the coarser, darker hairs, and electrolysis will take care of the finer, lighter hairs that remain. We typically do about four sessions of laser, and then send the client on for electrolysis. In the end, electrolysis will be essential to get to 100% clearance.
The full process, four sessions of laser plus electrolysis, often takes about 18 months.
What to expect: Sessions are quick, but intense! Because of the presence of testosterone, body hair is rooted deeply. We’ll be treating with longer pulse widths, and higher fluences, in order to get this hair. A moderate to significant amount of redness is typical after a session. We’ll be finishing with polysporin or cool aloe. The skin will generally be back to normal within 48 hours.
